Field Guide, is a collaborative project with Photographer, Jacob Francek. It is an outdoor installation of quilts which are draped over local creek beds and farm hills of Watauga County (Cherokee Nation), composed in space and framed like portraits. The quilts are collaged together with organic dyed linen and cotton material. The surfaces are monotyped and screen printed on, with additional hand-painted elements using oil pastels and acrylic paint. Foregoing traditional quilting patterns, the abstract assemblage of the soft paintings reflects the intuitive decision making, and emotional need of the individual where design resolutions and color combinations are both irregular and abrupt. The quilts, begun in the fall of 2019, are a manifestation of the necessity to self comfort during an extended period ofisolation and vulnerable housing situations. Documented against a backdrop of a thawing season, this performative act is an attempt to recall memory as place and a flawed but sincere effort to establish personal agency during transitional times.
